Gabe Tuttle

Gabe Tuttle is a black belt under Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez, the first homegrown black belt out of 10th Planet San Diego, and the owner and head instructor of 10th Planet Bastrop.

Born and raised in San Diego, Gabe found jiu-jitsu through his interest in mixed martial arts, began training regularly in 2014, and joined 10th Planet San Diego in 2015, where he quickly became part of the school’s teaching staff.

After moving to Austin in 2020, Gabe became head coach and general manager of 10th Planet Austin before eventually opening his own academy in Bastrop. His teaching style is shaped by years on the mats and a focus on technical growth, mental discipline, recovery, and the broader value of training as a lifelong practice.

coaching philosophy

Gabe Tuttle’s coaching philosophy is rooted in technical precision, steady progression, and building confidence through consistent work on the mats. He believes jiu-jitsu should be both effective and approachable, with instruction that helps students understand not just what to do, but why it works.

His approach emphasizes fundamentals, efficient movement, and problem-solving under pressure. Rather than chasing shortcuts, Gabe focuses on helping students develop a strong foundation, sharpen their decision-making, and build the habits that lead to long-term improvement. He wants every athlete, from first-day beginners to experienced competitors, to feel supported in their growth.

Gabe also values the mental side of training. For him, jiu-jitsu is not only about submissions and escapes, but about patience, discipline, resilience, and learning to stay calm in difficult situations. He aims to create an environment where students can challenge themselves, learn from mistakes, and grow with the support of a strong training community.

LIneage and rank

Gabe Tuttle is a first-degree black belt under Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez, one of the most recognizable names in the 10th Planet system. Promoted to brown belt in 2017 and black belt in 2019, Gabe became Richie’s first and only homegrown black belt, a distinction that speaks to both his skill and long-term commitment to the art.

Teaching and achievements

Gabe Tuttle brings more than a decade of teaching experience to the mats, with a coaching career that spans San Diego and Austin and now centers on 10th Planet Bastrop. He has developed a reputation for clear, technical instruction and for helping students build skills that hold up in both training and competition.

As an instructor, Gabe has also contributed to the growth of 10th Planet Austin and now leads his own academy, where he teaches regular no-gi classes, fundamentals, kids’ classes, and open mat sessions. That breadth of involvement shows both coaching depth and the ability to serve a wide range of students, from beginners to more advanced grapplers.

His instructional work extends beyond the academy. Gabe has produced grappling content such as Killer Kimura and Body Lock Kimura Counter, which shows that his teaching has been polished into structured, shareable systems rather than just casual mat-side advice

Gabe Tuttle serves as the owner and head instructor of 10th Planet Bastrop, where he leads classes, helps develop students on the mats, and builds the academy’s local training community.

His current role reflects years of growth within the 10th Planet system, including earlier leadership as head coach and general manager of 10th Planet Austin.

He is known for a teaching style grounded in technical detail, steady progression, and a strong emphasis on the mindset required to improve in jiu-jitsu. For students, that means learning from an instructor who not only knows the system, but has also helped shape and expand it in Central Texas.

competition highlights

Gabe Tuttle brings a deep background in no-gi competition to his coaching, and that experience shows up in the way he teaches.

Years of testing his game against high-level opposition have shaped a style built on timing, control, pressure, and technical precision.

On the mats, he translates that competitive experience into practical instruction that helps students understand not just how a technique works, but when and why it works under real resistance.
